“THE MAN IS CARRYING ALUMINUM FOIL.  BUT JEN AND WILL DON”T SEEM TO NOTICE.”

“THE MAN IS CARRYING ALUMINUM FOIL.  BUT JEN AND WILL DON”T SEEM TO NOTICE.”

“THE MAN IS CARRYING ALUMINUM FOIL.  BUT JEN AND WILL DON”T SEEM TO NOTICE.”

And I think that perhaps later the man will have an antenna on his head.  His head will be wrapped in foil.  As he will try to be struck by lightning.

And he says “hello” to me.  But I think that he is trying to sell me the aluminum foil.

“I don’t want…” I begin.  But I fade off because I don’t know what to say.  Because maybe some part of me does want the aluminum foil.

But Jen and Will don’t seem to notice.  It is like he doesn’t exist.  It is like I am the only one that sees him.  So they continue eating dinner.

And I wonder if the man knows secretly that I was struck by lightning in a friend’s dream.  Because it was months ago now when she had said excitedly,

“There was this glow about you.”

She had wanted to call for help.  But she couldn’t.  Because we were at this wedding.

And there was this way she looked at me.  An expression that I can’t describe.  An expression that was a little more than unsettling.

Like I shouldn’t have been there.

Like I shouldn’t have been going about my day.

Like my existence startled her.

And more.

And so I was afraid and comforted and excited and filled with this strange sense of wonder and perfection.  And the morning after she told me of the dream, I woke to find dark clouds overhead.  There was this overwhelming sense of  joy.  Exhilaration.  There was this urge to run out into the storm.  To go into the kitchen.  And to find myself.  To wrap foil around my head.

But morning made it seem like madness.  And now it is months later and I wonder if that morning was a mistake.

Because here I am stuck with Jen and Will.  And the man carrying the foil.  And I am whispering to myself,

“The man is carrying aluminum foil.  But Jen and Will don’t seem to notice.”

Over and over again.
